We drafted this pledge to: 

• Serve as a community resource for everyone — a reminder of our collective core values regardless of political leanings. 

• Identify who else is committed to safeguarding our democracy, so we can connect and rely on each other if times get tougher. 

• Bolster collaboration and constructive conversation with people across the political spectrum.

One key strategy of authoritarian leaders is to “flood the zone”, creating so much chaos that it overwhelms people, making it difficult to know what to focus on or causing us to tune out completely.

Many autocratic tactics described in this report will be best mitigated with targeted litigation, legislation, or other advocacy responses. But, from an overarching perspective, we recommend that civil society actors and the American public take the following approaches to prepare for and guard against the looming threat of an autocrat returning to the Oval Office.
